Tips on Staff Development

Richard Doelker and Patricia Lynett (1983) suggest 5 musts for staff development:

1. Both front-line and management staff be involved in the training (show that EVERYONE is committed)

2. Use appropriate strategies with the various levels of staff (one-size-fits-all model might be too general)

3. Training developer should have a birds-eye view of the agency (so all staff needs are met)

4. Plan, plan, and plan (if there is any purpose for the development training, plannig is imperative)

5. Create a "safe space" for learning (key to self and group development)
